Breuer: The trauma does not divide the mind. It just makes the memory of the incident be removed from the conscious.
;
Freud: But how these memories can create symptoms?
Breuer : Why are surrounded by emotions that are a natural outlet for the conscious. When you are sad, you cry. If you are angry, you fight. The emotion is discharged with a physical action. But what happens if emotion get stuck? Strangled. The fire exits. He is burning, the smoke fills the room, the hallway, the whole house and finally seeps through a window in the pantry. One symptom is just a morbid emotional energy going in the wrong place.
Dialogue taken from the film Beyond the Soul Freud , 1962.
